ADOPTION POLICY

Our aim is to ensure that all unwanted dogs which come into our care should be found loving new homes, where a lifestyle, appropriate to their breed and temperament, can be reasonably assured. Like humans all dogs are different & have different needs. There may be certain circumstances that require us at the rescue to occasionally 'bend' the rules.

Prospective owners must be aged 18 or over

We will not re-home to where a dog is kept outside the home

We will not re-home to potential owners who are likely to leave a dog alone for long periods of time (over 5 hours). This may be relaxed if there is already another dog & provisions are made by the new owner to meet the dogs needs.

We welcome owners with families, but will not rehome where there are children under 5 yrs old unless the dog has previously lived with children of a young age.

All dogs must be spayed/neutered. Should the dog be offered for adoption before being spayed/neutered (for example bitches who have only just finished a season cannot be spayed for 3 months as this may compromise their health or young males who are not fully developed) then the new owner MUST have the dog spayed/neutered (at the new owner's expense).  A copy of the spay/neuter agreement must be completed by the veterinary surgeon and returned to the Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue. A follow up by the Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue will ensure this happens and if the dog is not spayed/neutered within 3 months of the adoption date, the Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue will retrieve the dog back into our care.

The new owner is responsible for all veterinary treatment and third party liability from the moment the dog leaves the Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue and the signing of the Adoption Contract & the fee has been received by the carer on behalf of the rescue.

We expect all new owners to give the dog a reasonable amount of time to settle and adjust to a new life, however if an incompatibility arises the dog MUST be returned to the Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue at the new owner’s expense.

If you are considering adopting a dog then please see our adopting procedure -

Adopting Procedure.

The Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Breed Rescue cannot accept responsibility for the temperament of any dog once it has been re-homed.

All our dogs are given thorough health and temperament assessments.

However once a dog has settled into a new home, his or her behaviour can sometimes change.
We can only advise on the temperament of any dog while it is in our care, or in rare occasions based on the information provided by previous owner.
